English Dub Review: Bungo Stray Dogs “You, A Child of Sin, I, A Child of Sin”

Overview (Spoilers Below):

The president of the Detective Agency is arrested, and Kunikida is missing after having blown himself up with a grenade. Meanwhile, Atsushi and Kyouka are on the run, looking for a way to defeat the true mastermind: Fyodor.

Our Take:

Things are still not looking too bright for the Detective Agency, in case it wasn’t obvious enough. In addition to being on the run by the police, the members are now being hunted by the Hunting Dogs, who are proven to be more threatening regarding their abilities. Even worse is that the authorities have apprehended Fukuzawa. However, despite these grim outcomes, the group unexpectedly gained the upper hand, allowing them to fight for another day.

The episode continues where we left off, with the members being saved by a member of Port Mafia, Chuya Nakahara. Using his Gravity Manipulation skill, he’s able to give the members enough time to escape with him. Unfortunately, Kunikida seemingly risked his life to save the gang by blowing himself and Tetcho up with a grenade. Now hiding in the lair of Port Mafia, the remaining agency members encounter a discovery involving Port Mafia’s deal with Fukuzawa to help the agency in exchange for the transfer of one member.

The episode also sees Atsushi and Kyouka going into hiding after escaping from the mansion. Knowing that the former head of the Rats, Fyodor, is behind all of this, Atsushi and Kyouka seek the help of Francis Scott Key Fitzgerald, the leader of The Guild, in clearing their names and searching for Mushitaro. Following an assassination attack on Francis, the Guild leader mentions that Fyodor is imprisoned in Mersole, a high-tech security prison. But, of course, Fyodor’s not alone, as he has gained a roommate in the form of Dazai, who got sent to prison to save the agency. Atsushi and Kyouka are also tasked by Francis with a concerning mission to earn his assistance. Although considering that Francis knows the location of Port Mafia, he doesn’t seem like the person we can trust at the moment.

“You, A Child of Sin; I, A Child of Sin” continues the engaging seasonal arc with Kunikida seemingly out of the picture and Atsushi performing a task for Francis. Unfortunately, that doesn’t mean this episode didn’t suffer from its over-complexity regarding the dialogue and references. Since I’m still new to the Bungo Stray Dogs universe, my experience with the episode is much more complicated to grasp than the previous ones. I was able to follow along with what was going on, but I’m still having difficulty remembering everything that happened after watching it. Hopefully, that will change soon before I lose interest in the show because of my lack of experience.
