English Dub Review: Bofuri: I Don’t Want to Get Hurt, So I’ll Max Out My Defense “Maxing Defense and Tame Monsters”
Overview (Spoilers Below):
The members of Maple Tree continue their searches for monster companions. Iz’s search leads her on a quest to find rare materials in challenging areas, so she asks Maple and Mii for help.
Our Take:
Last week’s episode introduced us to the game’s seventh level, where players can tame monsters for the upcoming eighth event. Despite a few shortcomings, only three Maple Tree members gained their companions: Yui, Mai, and Kasumi. Add Maple and Sally with their own monster sidekicks into the mix, and we got five members with their monster companions. Unsurprisingly, the monsters Yui, Mai, and Kasumi tamed are as adorable as Syrup and Oboro, with the twins having two bears, Tsukimi and Yukimi, while Kasumi has Haku, the snake. What can I say? I’m a sucker for small, cute animals.
“Maxing Defense and Tame Monsters” continues this event with the remaining Maple Tree members accomplishing specific tasks to tame their monsters. First, we have Kanade battling a Mirror Slime that can shape-shift to match their opponent. He quickly tames it with his wit and mage skills and names it Sou. Then, Iz, accompanied by Maple and Mii, travels to various areas to retrieve rare materials for a quest. This led to Iz gaining the spirit monster companion Fay. Additionally, the episode introduces us to Mii’s companion, Ignis the Phoenix, who’s surprisingly effective against a Fire Dragon residing in the volcano.
Finally, Kuromu accomplishes a ghostly mission that rewards him with an armored ghost sidekick, Necro, which he can equip himself with. It’s both a companion and an accessory, meaning that Kuromu got two upgrades for the price of one. Unfortunately, Sally wasn’t too thrilled with Kuromu’s ghoulish partner, if you know what I mean.
Seeing how many members we have for the Maple Tree Guild, it makes sense for this event to be split into two episodes. Of course, this results in “Maxing Defense and Tame Monsters” becoming a repetitive side quest to distract us from its main journey. However, it easily compensates for it by giving Kanade, Kuromu, and Iz a chance to shine in their quests to earn their companions, especially Iz, who continues to prove her usefulness as a crafter. With Maple Tree now having their tamed monsters, we’re all set to tackle the game’s eighth event.
"There are also other characters that come and go (also owned by the Warner Bros. Discovery conglomerate media company)."
Huh. Is that just referring to other characters from the show itself, or is this implying that the new season is going to have cameos from other WBD IPs
