Review: Rick and Morty #2

Overview

In this month’s issue, while Naomie and Morty seem to be getting closer, the war between Goldenfolds and Ricks from all different universes are ramping up for a battle that will ultimately settle the debate of math vs science. Next issue, the battle commences.

Our Take

Rick and Morty return with a new comic edition that sees the inevitable war inching ever so closely. In anime, we would probably classify this as mostly filler, a pure setup for what looks to be the much more action-packed third chapter in this ongoing arc.

Some of the Alex Firer dialogue comes off a bit tacky and clunky, almost like a Zeppelin cover band that misses a few notes but is still able to put on a decent show. There isn’t a TON of variety in either the Ricks or the Goldenfolds, and in a lot of cases, the ideas seem rehashed from the TV series of the same name, and this continues with the aesthetic that features Fred C. Stresing as the illustrator and Andrew Dalhouse on colors. Nothing too groundbreaking in this issue in any one form, but some of the premises are still compelling, and personally, with all of the trouble surrounding Rick and Morty these days, maybe a show about Goldenfold and Naomie could do the trick.
