English Dub Review: Tomo-chan Is a Girl! “Birthday Present / Burn Up! The Ball Sports Tournament”

Overview:

Misuzu and Carol have a birthday surprise for Tomo. Also, Tomo and Jun are teammates for a school dodgeball tournament.

Our Take:

I asked for more progression in Tomo’s and Jun’s relationship last week. We get a little more of that in this episode. In the first segment, Misuzu and Carol give Tomo a makeover for her birthday. They also make her go in public while wearing makeup, a wig, and more feminine clothes. She runs into Jun at the store, but he doesn’t recognize her. They open to each other a little bit and Jun expresses his feelings to Tomo without realizing he did it directly.

In the second segment, Tomo gets placed on the boys’ team for their school’s volleyball tournament. Her and Jun are an unstoppable duo. In the finals, a formidable foe almost eliminates Tomo, but Jun jumps in front of her to save her. Tomo wants Jun’s help to eliminate him, but that doesn’t exactly work out. Regardless, we get a little more indirect build up to this relationship. I do like that Misuzu even says that time is running out in this episode. I agree. Tomo needs to make a move already.

That being said, I’m glad we got more moments between Tomo and Jun. We got some in the last episode, but we got more in this one. This episode gets things back on track a little more, but like I said, it’s about time Tomo makes a move and takes things to the next level with Jun. The show has spent enough time building up to it, so I’m hoping action will be taken shortly.
