English Dub Review: The Misfit of Demon King Academy “A Lesson by God”
Overview (Spoilers Below):
Erdomaid DittiJohn, one of the four evil royals, has appeared before Anos as a teacher at Demon King Academy. Not only that, he claims himself to be the Heavenly Father God NousGalia, and that the new “Child of God” who will vanquish the Demon King of Tyranny is also at the Demon King Academy. The “Misfit” who overcomes all odds sets off to a new battle!
Our Take:
We have yet another anime that’s entirely off my radar until now. This time, it’s another show where the main character reincarnates into a new life and attends a magical academy as a nobody. What a surprise. This time, the character is a reincarnated demon king in a society where royal demons rule over the lower-class hybrid ones. At least with that, it’s a little different than the ones I watched involving sorcerers.
Three years after the season one finale, The Misfit of Demon King Academy returns to attend its second year with the first half of season two. The episode starts with a flashback to 2,000 years ago, when Anos (Aleks Le) and his right-hand man Shin Reglia (Daman Mills) rescue the Great Spirit Leno from the Heavenly Father God NousGalia. It’s an interesting direction that showcases the events before, during, and after Anos’s peace treaty with the human hero, Kanon (Griffin Burns), from the perspective of Shin and Leno. It gave followers of the show a fresh view of this event that kickstarted the series. More importantly, it also gave newcomers like me a brief glimpse of the show’s lore.
We then jump forward to the present, where Anos and the academy students are greeted by two exchange students, Eleanore Bianca (Abby Trott) and Zeshia Bianca. Additionally, the episode delivers a decent tease of what’s to come for the remaining episodes, mainly the antagonists. One of them is NousGalia, who’s reincarnated into the academy’s history teacher, Erdomaid DittiJohn, seeking to continue his quest to revive the “Child of God”. Fortunately, Anos was able to weaken DittiJohn, thanks to his Sword of Destruction. But, of course, DittiJohn isn’t the only threat Anos and his harem crew should be worried about.
This brings us to the Four Evil Royals, including Ozma and Rinka, who invaded the Demon King Academy and attacked the other students, including Misha, at the end of the episode. The ending alone is enough for me to see the direction the show’s second season takes, especially since it ended with Anos confronting Ozma. Unfortunately, aside from its decent animation, I did find “A Lesson by God” difficult for me as a newcomer to get immediately attached to the show’s lore due to its complexity. Besides that, it’s a decent start to the show’s second season and a challenging battle for Anos to overcome.
"There are also other characters that come and go (also owned by the Warner Bros. Discovery conglomerate media company)."
Huh. Is that just referring to other characters from the show itself, or is this implying that the new season is going to have cameos from other WBD IPs
