English Dub Review: The Iceblade Sorcerer Shall Rule the World “The Boy Who Became the World’s Strongest Sorcerer Enjoys a Day Off”
Overview (Spoilers Below):
Ray defeats the giant monster that attacked them during the practical exercise in the Kafka Forest. However, a mysterious sorcerer revives it in an even more ferocious state. With the combined support from Amelia, Elisa, and Evi Armstrong, Ray manages to defeat it for good. However, their efforts were not in vain, as their group finished last. Later, Ray visits his master and the previous holder of the title of Iceblade Sorcerer, Lydia Ainsworth, to discuss certain matters…
Our Take:
The academy’s forest skills course concluded on a frightening note for Ray and the academy’s classmates. A monster arrived to attack the classmates, but in typical powerful sorcerer fashion, Ray managed to save the day. But, of course, he’s forced to defeat it again with his allies when a mysterious spy enchanted it to become stronger than before. However, it was after Amelia started catching on to Ray’s true identity. So that’s another reason Ray needs to watch his back if he wants to live a peaceful life as a commoner.
Aside from the brief action scene involving Ray and the creature, the plot is exactly what the title suggests: the characters taking a day off. After what happened in the Kafka Forest, it makes sense that they need a breather. From a storytelling perspective, this episode further expands the world-building and characters outside of them battling enemies.
This time, we see Ray visiting Lydia Ainsworth (Monet Lerner), his paraplegic master who’s also the former Iceblade Sorcerer. Their discussions include the research on Engrams in the brain that make magic possible and the Eugenics, fanatics that steal sorcerers’ magic from their brains. As if an imperial spy wasn’t enough to give Ray a hard time. Then, Ray hangs out with Elisa at the public library, where they read about Ainsworth and meet up with Claris, and helps Amelia with clothes shopping. Although, the latter ended in a way that we usually expect from an anime involving teens.
The episode also has Albert continuing to be an asshole as he’s training to defeat Ray for good. I know that the other students are being pricks to Ray, but it’s safe to assume that Albert has enough merits to be crowned “King of the Pricks”. I won’t be surprised if Albert gets his just desserts because, as far as I’m concerned, he makes me want to punch him in the face just to shut him up, and not in a fun way.
While I’m still not convinced by the show’s tried-and-true formula, the episode continues to deliver its enjoyability through the characters and world-building. The storyline mainly consists of Amelia, Elisa, and Claris feeling shy over Ray’s kind nature. However, it’s not without a couple of humorous moments that won me over, including Amelia accidentally exposing herself in her underwear after a spider frightened her. Additionally, I enjoyed Monet Lerner’s vocal performance as the sympathetic and motherly Lydia. As for what we’ll see in the next episode, it’ll likely involve Albert getting karma from Ray again and maybe another embarrassing scenario from one of the female characters.
"There are also other characters that come and go (also owned by the Warner Bros. Discovery conglomerate media company)."
Huh. Is that just referring to other characters from the show itself, or is this implying that the new season is going to have cameos from other WBD IPs
