English Dub Review: Revenger: “Love Never Dies; Adversary Advent”

Overview: Kurima (Aaron Campbell) and Soji (Nazeeh Tarsha) discover more criminal entities are hot on the ronin’s trail.

Our Take: Nio’s past in the Doan Company’s enslavement circus, unfortunately, doesn’t offer much in the way of core details or development. But it makes up for that in his actions. It’s about Nio going out of his way to protect enslaved children from being abused by Doan, even offering a gold coin. With how gross and scummy Doan, his just desserts are satisfying enough. Usui also shows how much he cares in prioritizing his safety, despite their strife with Soji, too, in treating him with his own money.

Chinatown criminals are added to the list of organizations that want Kurima’s head to find Matsumine’s opium he hid. This is, ironically, the unexciting part of their mission with it merely being a retread of rogues on his tail. The interest lies in the Revengers and the choices they make with Kurima in mind. There are pragmatic, selfish reasons to keep Kurima alive. While they are self-serving, there is another side in Koji caring the most about him in his desperation. While more moments would better flesh it out, their friendship is a wholesome development. As a bonus, it rectifies an earlier issue in explaining Raizo’s superb artistic ability, tying in his meditative samurai skill set. As is a persistent trait of the show, the explanation isn’t incredibly deep, but functions well enough.

The Revengers are now on the radars of the Chinatown gang and their boss. He comes off as intelligent and well-connected to foe for them to face off with. Hopefully, it makes for an intense race to Matsumine’s hidden drug supply.
