English Dub Review: Berserk: The Golden Age Arc – Memorial Edition “One Snowy Night”

Overview (Spoilers Ahead):

The Hawks celebrate their victory, but Guts is not completely satisfied.

Overview:

The Band of the Hawk attend a noble ball. They’re all being praised and they get to dance with nobility. Not only that, but they also achieve the rank of Phoenix White Knights. Everyone is having a good time, except for Guts and Casca. Being at parties like this isn’t really their style.

They have a nice heart-to-heart in which Guts kind of reveals a thought he’s had. He later talks to Judeau and tells him that he plans to leave the band of the Hawk. Judeau talks to Guts about Griffith’s plan and how close Guts and Casca have become. He wants to figure out why Guts wants to leave the Hawks. Guts says that he’s grateful for everything the Hawks have done for him, but he’s looking for that special something and he won’t find it if he stays. The episode ends with Casca and Griffith discovering that Guts wants to leave, so that will certainly be where we pick up next time.

This episode is a bit slow on the first half, but once we find out that Guts wants to leave the hawks, it’s not bad. Guts feels like he’s done with this chapter of his life and he wants to start a new one. I’m sure Casca and Griffith won’t like that too much, so I’m interested to see how that confrontation goes.

I like the conversations between Guts and Casca, but this one feels a little too short. It doesn’t connect with me as much as past ones have. However, the conversation between Guts and Judeau is much more impactful. We get to learn a little more about both characters. Judeau also looks like he might have discovered one of Guts’ secrets, but that was quickly dropped. I’m curious if that will come up again in the future.
