English Dub Review: Tomo-chan Is a Girl! “Tomo’s Skirt / The School Idol”

Overview:

Tomo experiments with her wardrobe choices and we meet the popular girl in class: Carol Olston.

Our Take:

In the first half of the episode, a random stranger starts feeling Tomo up on the bus until Jun comes to her rescue. After that, he tells her she shouldn’t wear skirts anymore. Misuzu tells her to take it up a notch instead and try wearing a skirt without shorts underneath. She does and this makes Jun awkward around her. He makes this clear to her too and he just wants her to be comfortable.

This half has its funny moments of course, but it’s also pretty sweet. It’s nice to see more of Jun’s feelings for Tomo come out, even if they’re not completely romantic. Sure, there are some awkward moments, but they don’t overstay their welcome.

The second half introduces us to Carol Olston. She’s the popular girl from Britain who’s in Tomo’s class. She’s introduced as Misaki’s fiancée, but it’s hard to tell if they’re being serious. At first, she sees Tomo as her enemy. She makes a deal with Misuzu and gets trained by Jun. This is all in an attempt to fight Tomo. Once Tomo gets jealous about Jun and Carol spending time together, Carol calls it off. After all of this, she just wants to be Tomo’s friend and that happens easily.

I really enjoy Carol. She has so many hilarious moments in this episode. I love seeing her training with Jun and the gag of her just popping up in random places. Not to mention, her dialogue in the dub is top-notch. I also feel for her a little bit. She’s never had friends before, despite being rich and popular, but now she has two in Tomo and Misuzu.

Both of these segments have nice feel good moments. We’re also learning a little more about characters, especially Carol. I think this episode is a great introduction for her. There’s also a shocking revelation at the end of the episode that I assume we’ll learn more about in the next one. The humor is still at its peak. The jokes haven’t run their course yet and it seems like the show knows how to keep them fresh so far. Tomo-chan Is a Girl! is currently two for two and I’m hoping it stays on this hot streak.
