English Dub Review: Buddy Daddies “Piece of Cake”

Overview (Spoilers Ahead):

Two assassins go about their usual work when a child unexpectedly appears in their lives.

Our Take:

Kazuki Kurusu and Rei Suwa are assassins who are also roommates. Kazuki likes to go out, gamble, and meet women. Rei, however, is more of a shut in who likes to take in stray animals. Kazuki tells him he really has to comprehend that kind of responsibility given their line of work. There’s a deeper meaning to what he says that revolves around his own life.

While the two are on a job, a girl named Miri comes along looking for her father. She gets mixed up in the gunfire, but Kazuki makes sure she’s safe from harm. When all is said and done, Kazuki takes Miri in. The icing on the cake is that Miri’s father just so happened to be the guy Kazuki and Rei just went out to kill. However, Miri thinks Kazuki is her biological father.

Obviously, a lot of comparisons can be drawn to Spy x Family. However, I think the show does enough to set itself apart. The main characters aren’t faking a marriage, taking in a child isn’t part of a mission, and both of the adoptive parents are men.

The way this episode sets up the story is interesting. There are a lot of details that are still missing, but I’m assuming the show will fill in the blanks with more episodes. We’re also treated to over the top action scenes and some good comic relief. Naturally, there are some heartwarming scenes as well given the childcare nature of the show.

I do think this episode feels a little slow, but it’s still a good introduction to our main characters and what to expect moving forward. This looks like it will be a fun show with nice family bonding moments. It’ll be interesting to see how this new family relationship will unfold.
