English Dub Season Review: The Great Jahy Will Not Be Defeated! Season One

Overview:

After the fall of the Dark Realm, Jahy is stuck in modern-day Japan. No A/C, starving, and barely affording rent are the former general’s newest issues. Added into the mix is the fact that she is almost always in her childlike state. But the Great Jahy won’t be defeated that easily!

Our Take:

This anime was an interesting show to review because I didn’t know what to expect. I’m not the biggest fan of loli stuff but this show manages to avoid most of those issues. Other than Jahy looking like a kid part of the time there isn’t really anything too gross about it. When she transforms into her adult form you get a fan-servicey magical girl-type sequence which is about as bad as it gets luckily.

Speaking of magical girls, that leads me to a chance to talk about my favorite part/character of the anime. Kyouko aka the Magical Girl was the best part of the show for me. She was endearing and kind and took on all the misfortune of holding onto mana crystals just to help others. Not only that she is voiced by one of my favorites, Brittney Karbowski. Once Kyouko became somewhat of a regular in the show was when it started to get a lot better for me. Unfortunately, that was only like the last third.

This anime doesn’t really have too much going for it. The animation is passable and the VAs do a good job but it doesn’t really set the world on fire or anything. There are some standout episodes if you’re looking for some heartwarming interactions. I would also say that Jahy’s growth as a character was fantastic. Some of the best I have seen in any anime but even that wasn’t enough to really elevate it.

Having said that, The Great Jahy Will Not Be Defeated! isn’t bad by any means. It is a solid anime that fans of a slice of life with a few fantastical elements thrown in might really enjoy. I’d also like to give a shout-out to Lisette Monique Diaz who voices Jahy. I hadn’t heard her in anything before this and she had a tough job voicing Jahy. With the character changing from kid to adult so often I imagine that was tough on her voice but she handled it and did great.

In the end, this anime would be something I think is a solid distraction and you won’t necessarily feel like you wasted your time. But you will probably forget most things about it after you’ve watched it. It doesn’t do anything special and the plot goes nowhere really which is disappointing.
