English Dub Season Review: Gudetama: An Eggcellent Adventure Season One

Overview: A lax, little egg come-to-life in Gudetama (Roger Craig Smith), is dragged on an adventure across Japan, by his kind, sibling chick, Shakipiyo (Colleen O’ Shaughnessey), to find their momma.

Our Take: There is a beautiful simplicity in a raw egg. And that charmingly extends even more so to Gudetama. The yolky boy’s calm and laid back demeanor  makes him a perfect complimentary dish to his sweet furry companion and other crazy faces, both food and human alike, they meet in their Japan-trotting quest. His pragmatic, pessimistic nature in the most precarious situations and with colorful foods, make for some wondrous dry wit. Shakipiyo is a bundle of joy, keeping his optimism, despite their dire circumstances they are constantly hurdled to and from along with a less-than-enthused egg.

There are some amusing egg puns and jokes, but thankfully they are not overdone (I will see myself out) to the point of annoyance with how clever and cute they are throughout. There is an excellent scramble (hehe) of live action actors and gorgeously realistic CG in animated food and animals with delightful expressiveness.

It transitions into being more self-aware highlighting the wackiness of a talking egg, the premise of a show based on one, and even the real world delicious fate their mother could be subjected to. Most importantly though, their journey is a touching one in how devoted they are to each other and wholesome in how they come to appreciate their own individuality that will warm your heart from farm-to-table (last one).
