English Dub Review: My Hero Academia “Dabi’s Dance”

Overview:

As Ochaco and Toga exchange words and blows, Gigantomachia reaches Shigaraki and the heroes, and Dabi reveals the secret of his past.

Our Take(Spoilers):
Going to give another spoiler alert here because I can’t really talk about the impact of this episode without talking about one of the biggest reveals of the series. When it comes to reveals I wouldn’t say this one was actually surprising but more the impact of it came at the absolute worst time for the heroes.

Dabi is actually Endeavor’s son Toya Todoroki. Now as I said this isn’t exactly a surprise because I am sure once we all saw Dabi and his extreme fire powers we thought the same thing. When Shoto’s siblings discussed a sibling of theirs that had died it was all but confirmed. Still, you can pull off an obvious reveal in pretty awesome ways and that is exactly what happened here.
I also want to sing the praises of Jason Liebrecht, who plays Dabi. I think about 95% of the dialogue in this episode was Dabi, he got to do a fairly large monologue and he killed it. He’s long been one of my favorite VAs so I was looking forward to what he would do in this episode and he absolutely exceeded my expectations. You could feel the venom and animosity in Dabi’s voice as he finally confronted the person he hates most, Endeavor. Amazing job by Liebrecht.
The next episode will be interesting because while we know this to be true and the public seems to believe it as well there is one hole in his story. He said that Hawks killed Best Jeanist, but at the end of the episode Jeanist came to save the day. When people see this they might start to wonder what else Dabi might have lied about. Seeing what happens in the next couple of episodes is going to be exciting.
