English Dub Review: Beast Tamer “Black Waves”

Our Take

This time around, the diversion team of Stella comes together with her round of Knights with Kanade and Tania to stop that piece of shit Edgar in his tracks from the front entrance, while the infiltration team of Rein, Sora, and Runa come in from the underground to save the oppressed and enslaved. And as previously stated, the ultimate species is part of the saving folk out of sheer happenstance with Rein needing to investigate this alone is of utmost priority. And sure enough, he encounters the imprisoned Nina a fox lady of the demigod race tied up in slavery, who was forcibly apprehended and then abused frequently by Edgar and his quest for power.

It’s a surprisingly emotional scene for a character we just met who is willing to trust a boy scout like Rein to unlock the slave collar. Of course, the girls would jokingly throw shade at Rein for saving Nina, though they know his temperament by now. But just when you think there’s an instant happy ending, Edgar interrupts everything with the secret weapon he got from Arios with unexpected results…

Overall, this episode went through one hell of a tonal shift. It went from adventurous and goofy with the Fairy sister’s chemistry at play, but when it got serious with Nina’s scenes and her later rescue from Rein is where it was emotionally effective and sold the drama for me. And it doesn’t make you forget that while monsters like Edgar exist, people like Rein and his new circle also exist to right those wrongs with kindness and humanity in the face of cruelty and indifference. With two episodes left, I’m curious how they could possibly end this, but I’m willing to stick around and find out!
