Review: Rick and Morty “Full Meta Jackrick”
Overview
Remember “Never Ricking Morty?” This is the sequel episode. Essentially a whole other episode that pantomimes the tropes of Hollywood (and not quite Hollywood) screenwriting.
Our Take
I guess this week’s episode was the pseudo “Interdimensional Cable”, but with an attempt to make a more cohesive point on the vanity of Hollywood screen writing. Not unlike “Vindicators 3” or “One Crew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest“, we get a number of superhero characters that represent popular tropes in modern-day Hollywood screen writing and the intense scrutiny there-of courtesy of our Reddit/Twitter denizens who like to baseline each and every scene versus just accepting that this is just entertainment and it should be treated as such.
Chris Meloni and Paul Giamatti returns as Jesus Christ and Story Lord from the aforementioned “Never Ricking Morty” though Jesus is killed off rather early on so we don’t get to spend TOO much time with him. Fortunately, Giamatti’s character is such a perfect fit in the “Rick-verse” so I was quite excited to get a second go-round and “Story Lord” never disappoints and the climactic fight scene was so damn good. In terms of animated choreography dedicated to fight scenes, Rick and Morty might be America’s best example.
That said, “Full Meta Jackrick” probably would have been more fun if the She-Hulk season finale didn’t JUST do a lot of these jokes and at a much better pace. The Rick and Morty take on the “Meta” bit is probably an episode enjoyed most by the Hollywood writing nerd rather than a casual fan but hey at least we get a fake ad for a Rick plush that you can see here.
We never did get an explanation for the near month-long hiatus but so far this season Alex Rubens has written TWO episodes for Rick and Morty’s sixth season including this one and neither of them I’ve liked very much. I don’t know if that’s a coincidence or not, but we’ve got three more on the way and I really want to see Rick and Morty end things on a different note.
"There are also other characters that come and go (also owned by the Warner Bros. Discovery conglomerate media company)."
Huh. Is that just referring to other characters from the show itself, or is this implying that the new season is going to have cameos from other WBD IPs
