English Dub Review: Raven of the Inner Palace: “The Skylark Princess”

Overview: A wedge is formed between Liu (Alexis Tipton) and Jiujiu (Bryn Apprill) as a misunderstanding occurs with how little the Raven Consort understands how to interact with the people closest to her.

Our Take: The best aspect of the episodic nature of the cases that the Raven Consort takes are how they are an allegory for how she deals with properly expressing herself in social situations that making new friends brings.

That classic procedure is an overwhelming strength when the late Skylark princess’ ghost bird can not pass over due to what plagues all spirits trapped on the mortal plane: an unresolved issue. It takes the form of the princess’ lady-in-waiting who is regretful over her not being there for the pure-hearted ill girl. It is a tragic tale of regret, one that plays beautifully into Liu’s own issue with Jiujiu in misunderstanding her feelings as she learns to properly take her loved one’s feelings into account with that sentiment extending to Gaojun’s as well. Souxue, giving away a beloved and heartfelt gift that was meaningful to him, so casually, shows how much she is learning to properly respect and honor her newfound friends. It is a struggle that is a symptom of her distanced lifestyle that shows how old habits die hard, especially when they are so deeply woven into one’s own life tapestry.

Gaojun acts as an empathetic voice of reason in passing down the story of his own regret in the tragic loss of his close personal friend, who died on his account, living with the pain of never extending his gratitude for all he did for him. Also the fact that the Emperor would even tell Liu about a harsh chapter of his past illustrates just how much he is falling in love with her, growing more attached by the moment.

All of these saddening, remorseful tales of hindsight weave an impactful emotional lesson for Liu in making amends with the cherished people in her life, while she still has them, so as to not live with the painful guilt in the future. Shouxue’s endearing naivety of the situation as well as her wholehearted true intentions make for wholesome reconciliation between her and Jiujiu. It is especially sweet in how they plainly care for one another with their dedication, especially in being too kind for each of their own good.
