English Dub Review: Made in Abyss: The Golden City of the Scorching Sun “Value”

Overview (Spoilers Below):

Faputa continues her assault on the village, but the perimeter is destroyed in the process. Outside creatures are now invading the village and wreaking havoc.

Our Take:

Faputa defeats Reg and all hope seems lost. She goes after Riko, but Gabu steps in to protect Faputa’s future. Then Nanachi and Belaf make an appearance. Faputa destroys Belaf, but in doing so, she gains his memories of her mother. This overwhelms her and now she doesn’t what to think.

She doesn’t have much time to reflect because outside creatures invade the village and start devouring the Hollows. Faputa tries to fight them off, but she’s no match for them and she gets ripped apart. The souls of her siblings interfere, but are quickly defeated. Gabu tries to help her, but he also falls to this stampede.

When all seems lost for Faputa, some of the villagers feed her parts of themselves so she can regenerate. Faputa says she now understands that the village may have value after all.

This is another heavy episode and definitely the bloodiest one of the season so far. Made in Abyss has always been a violent show, but this episode still has some intense fight scenes.

I continue to feel bad for Faputa, especially since she’s losing her friends and she’s being torn apart fighting for her mother’s wish. She may have a short temper and she may be capable of a lot of destruction, but she’s still a sympathetic character.

It’s also nice to see Nanachi finally return to her friends. Although, I’m confused as to how Belaf is still there. He was clearly shown disintegrating in the last episode, so I thought he had disappeared. I suppose that’s a minor complaint since he plays an integral role in this episode.

With next week’s episode being the season finale, I’m excited to see how it will wrap up. There are a lot of directions it could go in, which makes it even better. Regardless of how it ends, I’m sure there will be a monumental event and probably a lot more heartbreak.
