Review: The Smurfs “The Magic Pumpkin/Lost Cat”
Overview (Spoilers Below):
The Magic Pumpkin
On Halloween, Smurfette gives Wimpy Smurf a magic pumpkin that makes him terrifying, only the pumpkin isn’t actually magical at all.
Lost Cat
Azrael has had enough of Gargamel and leaves the hovel! Once in the forest, he gets injured and is picked up by Wild.
Our Take:
The first episode has the Smurfs celebrating Halloween once again in the show’s second season. Additionally, it focuses on yet another fearful Smurf who goes from scared to scary. Seeing that Scaredy had some spooky fun in the season one episode, “The Scariest Smurf”, it seemed appropriate to have Wimpy get the chance to provide some scary goodness.
The plot in “The Magic Pumpkin” consists of Wimpy Smurf trying to be scary to attend the Smurfs’ Halloween Party. Unfortunately, it appears more complicated than he thought regarding his lack of scaring tactics. This resulted in Smurfette using the “magic pumpkin” trick to make Wimpy feel better. However, she also has to get everyone to pretend to be scared of Wimpy for her playful scheme to work, which results in some humorous spooky shenanigans. Then, Smurfette has to take the pumpkin off of Wimpy when he takes it too far, leading them to the lair of Bigmouth. Finally, Wimpy saves Smurfette by scaring Bigmouth with a giant pumpkin.
The second episode doesn’t have any Halloween treats in its plot. Instead, it has a storyline involving Azrael going off on his own after Gargamel throws him out for being comforting towards him. After getting injured running from Bigmouth, Azrael is taken in by Wild Smurf, who asks Papa and the other Smurfs to heal him.
The humor in this episode consists of Wild and Smurfette teaching Azrael to eat blueberries instead of the Smurfs while Papa makes a potion to heal the cat’s paw. Sadly, the other Smurfs aren’t taking a liking to Azrael and fear that he’s tricking them, including Hefty and Jokey. Hefty and Jokey use every attempt to drive Azrael crazy enough for Papa to kick him out. Wild is then forced to send Azrael away after Azrael’s dream makes him want to eat Smurfs again. Fortunately, Wild and Azrael remained the best of pals after Azrael saved him from Gargamel.
Overall, both episodes provide plenty of fun in their spookiness and feline frenzy. “The Magic Pumpkin” is another entertaining Halloween-themed episode featuring another Smurf delivering the frights and giggles. “Lost Cat” is enjoyable for its plot involving Azrael’s quest to be loved after getting kicked out by his abusive owner. It also has me wondering why Azrael still hangs around with Gargamel despite the latter being a terrible friend to him. I guess I’ll never know.
"There are also other characters that come and go (also owned by the Warner Bros. Discovery conglomerate media company)."
Huh. Is that just referring to other characters from the show itself, or is this implying that the new season is going to have cameos from other WBD IPs
