English Dub Review: Remake Our Life! “Learn Lessons”

Overview (Spoilers Below):

As Kyoya adjusts to the new future he finds himself in, he learns about the rough situation that Kawasegawa faces at work.

Our Take:

The end of last week’s episode was when Kyoya realized he had messed up big time. With his desire to rush the game the only reason for his friends’ course corrections, Kyoya now has to live in an alternate timeline where he’s a family man. The good thing about it is that he’s married to Aki, which has been hinted at throughout the last few episodes. However, it doesn’t overshadow the problems at Kyoya’s new job.

For starters, Attraction Point is developing a new game called Mystic Clockwork. Unfortunately, Eiko’s team is struggling to keep up with the deadlines the company president is making. Even worse, Minori still has trouble drawing despite receiving a confidence boost from Kyoya in the last episode. Another problem they’re facing is the number of bugs and errors interfering with the game’s engine. The episode focuses on the problems Kyoya, Eiko, and the team are facing while creating the game and their attempts to convince their boss to delay its release. During the process, Kyoya tries not to interfere with any more situations to prevent the timeline from changing again.

Remake Our Life has offered plenty of examinations of the process of making different types of media amid its compelling seasonal plot about finding one’s true passion. The episodes in the first half explored parts of the filmmaking process without extensive padding, while the second half focused on the process of making a game. “Learn Lessons” is no different, as it explores the challenges of creating a video game, especially one made for your phone.

This episode isn’t afraid to show that developing a game is no easy task, especially when your boss is a piece of shit who only cares about quantity over quality. The worse part about this guy is that he refuses to delay the game to give the employees more time to fix it. Kyoya has learned that mistake in “Produce Results”, yet his own game turned out well. However, the same doesn’t apply in “Learn Lessons”, with the lack of time needed resulting in Mystic Clockwork being panned for its bugs, missing artwork, and inconsistent gacha drop rates.

The show has done a miraculous job in showcasing the consequences of quantity over quality, including tight deadlines and working overtime. “Learn Lessons” is another example of this dilemma, as it represents how a rushed development can result in a messy project, whether it’s a movie or a game. Fortunately, despite this problem, Kyoya is willing to find salvation in the company’s mistakes and his own, mainly due to Nanako’s new song. But seriously, if your boss is anything like the one in this episode, you might need to consider working for a new company.
