English Dub Review: My Isekai Life: I Gained a Second Character Class and Became the Strongest Sage in the World! “Assassins in Pursuit”

Overview (Spoilers Below):
Yuji has a price on his head, and two assassins are after him. He could easily defeat them, but that would only make him a bigger target. This calls for a more unique approach.

Our Take:
As seen in last week’s episode, Yuji has stealthily retrieved some sacred texts from the cult before protecting the world from the Cleansing Flame. Unfortunately, the texts appeared to be booby-trapped with a spell that made them blank. The only one remaining is a list of targets the cult is after. However, it looks like the cultists aren’t the only ones with this list.
This leads us to the start of the season’s second half, where a mysterious assassin duo has the same list of targets as the cult, concluding that they’re working for the organization. Their next target is Yuji, who’s heading to Boginia, known for providing armor for tamed monsters. During his journey, Yuji notices that the assassins are following him to determine if he’s a threat or not, so he decides to find a solution to get him off their list instead of fighting them.
The episode’s central conflict consists of Yuji looking for armor for his tamed slimes. But before that, he has to throw the assassins off their trail. The only way to do that is to pretend to be a weak and ordinary tamer.
This is another moment where Yuji’s desire to hide his tremendous powers actually matters in a life-or-death situation. He refuses to fight the assassins, as it would cause him to be a bigger target for anyone else, mainly the cult. So he insists on using something tactical to outsmart them, even if it means being a drunk or a penniless traveler. Eventually, the assassins conclude that Yuji isn’t a threat despite seeing him accidentally using his weapon summoning magic to kill one of the bulls. They decide to go after their next target, Father Steyl, but not before Yuji uses his slime to freeze them solid.
The episode also features another flashback showcasing how Yuji first met one of his allies, Proudwolf. While Proudwolf fights off the Rushbulls with his incredible strength, Yuji reminisces his first encounter with the wolf, whom he quickly befriends after trapping it with his magic. While the side characters still haven’t done much to make themselves unique, I still appreciate the show for making them likable and providing flashbacks of how Yuji meets his companions.
“Assassins in Pursuit” offers another decent scenario where Yuji’s life depends on him not using his powerful magic in public. More importantly, it showcases Yuji as a character who’s aware of using brains over skills to outsmart his adversaries despite his struggle to hide his powers. Unfortunately, he might need to use them again to take care of a monster-size problem in Boginia.
