English Dub Review: Made in Abyss: The Golden City of the Scorching Sun “The Form the Wish Takes”

Overview (Spoilers Below):

Vueko continues telling the origin story of Ilblu and Faputa.

Our Take:

There is a lot that goes on in this episode. We see the remainder of Irumyuui’s transformation. She continues giving birthing, but Wazukyan takes her babies and uses them for food. This destroys Belaf and especially Vueko.

Ultimately, Irumyuui transforms into the village and everybody sacrifices their bodies to her. They all end up turning into Hollows. Everybody, that is, except for Vueko. She attempts to take her own life in order to end all of the pain, but Wazukyan saves her. He then locks Vueko inside Irumyuui’s head, which is where Riko found her.

I can’t overlook the fact that Faputa is Irumyuui’s final child. She goes on a rampage when she’s born because she can feel the pain her mother is in. Vueko tells Riko that Faputa’s mission is to free her mother. If she succeeds, that will be the end of the village.

There’s also a scene in which Reg finds Faputa again. He tells her that he needs a part of her and Faputa is willing to give him one in order to keep a promise.

This episode is nuts. I never would have guessed that the village was really a person that was transformed into it, especially a child like Irumyuui. It’s actually a pretty disturbing thought, but that’s what I’ve come to expect from Made in Abyss.

I’m also shocked to see what Wazukyan is really like. He always seemed like a great and caring leader to me. However, this episode shows him in a whole new light. I don’t know if evil is the right way to describe him, but I don’t agree with his actions.

I feel really bad for Vueko. She reveals that she considered taking her own life more than once. She hated what was happening so much and just wanted to end Irumyuui’s pain so badly, that she was willing to die in order to do so. Vueko is becoming my favorite character in this show with each passing episode.

Now that we know who Faputa really is and what she wants to achieve, I can’t wait to see what happens next. I can’t imagine the repercussions of destroying the village, but now that I know how it came to be, that might not be such a bad thing.
