English Dub Review: Overlord: “Countdown to Extinction”

Overview

The Sorcerer Kingdom declares war against the Re-Estize Kingdom and gives them exactly one month to prepare. Ains plans to show the world what happens to the enemies of Ains Ooal Gown. However, a few in Nazarick consider this massacre excessive…

Our Take

Ainz’s Sorcerer Kingdom proceeds to make a declaration of war in response to Phillip’s massive fuck-up with the Holy Re-Estize Kingdom, and Albedo’s nonchalant attitude should already put into the minds of the nobles of how much a grave mistake they made. What’s worse, a month’s worth of prep ain’t all that enough for those who have faced Ainz before and know of his terror. In retrospect, Ainz hasn’t even moved an inch yet, and this is merely a warning to all parties for his Nazarick expansion plan. It’s also been a long while since we saw Albedo’s older sister Nigredo.

Meanwhile, other new characters are introduced within the fishing village of E-Naeul, and while its population is small, this is fit enough for Ainz’s precursor attack against the available adventurers who call themselves “The Four Arnaments”. Leading them is a white-haired lady named Scama Elbero, with one of the standout characters within her circle being a magical priestess named Lilynette, who despite being comical at times, comes across as a perverted deviant who wears a slutty Nun-like outfit and is disturbingly open about her desire to marry a young prince which is super fucked up and all kinds of creepy that a King would even be ok with using his kid as a motivational reward for this sicko, especially a woman who openly admitted to being turned on at the mere mention of his age.

Overall, aside from that living embodiment of “Stranger Danger” that was introduced, this remained a fun borderline filler episode that does mostly everything I expect out of the show itself. The proceedings felt pretty quick but in a good way. Nigredo’s conversation with Ainz makes her all the more memorable. The battle at E-Naeul was intense and had some good animation as well. And seeing that a mysterious person in Red at the end of the end cliffhanger left me excited to see how Nazarick will respond to it. Looking forward to next week!
