English Dub Review: Made in Abyss: The Golden City of the Scorching Sun “Friend”

Overview:

Reg comes face-to-face with Faputa, Majikaja takes Nanachi to get supplies, and Riko goes to look for her friends.

Our Take:

At the end of the last episode, Reg came in contact with Faputa, also known as the princess of the Hollows. Faputa recognizes Reg and it turns out she knows him. Reg has no memory of Faputa, so Faputa takes him to a different location. She performs an inspection to see if he’s the real Reg and everything seems in order. However, Reg doesn’t appreciate this and decides to leave.

Meanwhile, Majikaja is taking Nanachi to get food and water for Riko. Majikaja reminds Nanachi that such items to be traded for. Majikaja asks Nanachi what has value to them and Nanachi mentions Mitty. Majikaja then describes Mitty and takes Nanachi to see someone. That someone does look exactly like Mitty.

Riko is still suffering from diarrhea, but she decides to look for her friends when she starts feeling a little better. She catches the attention of a bunch of Hollows. They corner her and grab Meinya. The Hollow who previously hurt Meinya then comes to the rescue. Riko calls the Hollow “Maaa” and they set off together. They go to a restaurant and Riko meets a couple of Hollows who can speak her language. One of them just so happens to be one of the three great sages.

This episode raises several questions. It’s been established that Reg doesn’t remember anything before he met Riko. However, it seems Faputa knows Reg very well. It also seems like Reg was his name before Riko gave it to him. Reg asks Faputa what their relationship is, but she doesn’t give him a straight answer. I’m curious to know what their relationship is as well. In fact, I’m curious to know about Reg’s past in general and I have been pretty much since I started watching the show.

Maaa seems to have some significance. This is the second time she appears and she seems to be one of the emotive Hollows. I’m curious to see what her role is. I can also say the same about the great sage Riko meets in the restaurant.

The biggest question is if the Hollow Nanachi meets at the end of the episode is actually Mitty. Logic would dictate that it can’t be since Reg obliterated Mitty at the end of Season One. I have doubts that this is actually Mitty, but I’m sure there are plenty of details about the abyss that I don’t know about. For all I know, this could be one of them.
