English Dub Review: The Maid I Hired Recently Is Mysterious “The Maid I Hired Recently Is Mysterious”
Overview (Spoilers Below):
Having lost his parents in a car crash, Yuuri is left to live in the mansion on his own. One day, a beautiful maid, Lilith, shows up, offering to work for him for free.
Our Take:
If someone asks you if you trust someone who appears out of nowhere and offers to serve you hand and foot for free, the best answer is a resounding “maybe”. But, if that someone is a gorgeous maid with purple eyes, it’s a “yes”. For now, at least. That’s how I can best describe this latest anime from studios Silver Link and Blade, which sees a boy hiring a suspicious maid to serve him.
“The Maid I Hired Recently Is Mysterious” introduces us to Yuuri (Macy Anne Johnson), a wealthy young boy left alone in his family mansion after his parents’ death. Since he can’t afford servants to take care of him and his mansion, Yuuri is left to run the place himself, but to no avail. Yuuri then encounters a maid named Lilith (Natalie Van Sistine), who appears out of nowhere and offers to work without pay. Naturally, this raises Yuuri’s suspicions about where she even came from and her true intentions regarding him.
The majority of the episode represents Yuuri spying on Lilith and speculating about whom she is, including being a sorcerer. Lilith attempts to play along, which only makes Yuuri even more suspicious. Yuuri thought Lilith was reading a spellbook and creating a love potion, but in reality, she’s studying the basics of housekeeping and cooking. These moments quickly reminded me of Aharen-san wa Hakarenai, which had Raido believing who Aharen is regarding her “suspicious” actions. Even though this is the first episode, the show’s attempt at copying this element from another anime felt a bit rusty for me. Maybe it’ll get better in the later episodes?
The episode also includes a flashback of how Yuuri first met Lilith while attempting to be the man of the mansion. While reluctant at first, Yuuri wound up hiring her after being convinced by her demeanor and purple eyes. We eventually see why Lilith wanted to be Yuuri’s maid in the episode’s conclusion. She received a letter following the death of Yuuri’s parents, resulting in her leaving her home immediately to take the position. While we don’t see what the letter said, there’s a reason to believe that Lilith may have a connection to the wealthy family.
The Maid I Hired Recently Is Mysterious is another strange concept that I had the pleasure of experiencing for the first time. While its first episode didn’t start the show with a bang regarding its formula, I was somehow entertained by the banter between Yuuri and Lilith. Additionally, the humor was worth a chuckle or two, mainly from Yuuri failing to do anything in the house by himself. I’m curious to see what the show would offer next for the young imaginable boy and her mysterious servant. However, I’m also keeping my expectations low in case it doesn’t improve its performance during the rest of the season.
"There are also other characters that come and go (also owned by the Warner Bros. Discovery conglomerate media company)."
Huh. Is that just referring to other characters from the show itself, or is this implying that the new season is going to have cameos from other WBD IPs
