English Dub Review: Remake Our Life! “Just Who Am I?”

Overview (Spoilers Below):
With an equipment mishap threatening to throw his group project into chaos, can Kyoya come up with a creative solution?

Our Take:
When we last left off on Kyoya’s journey in the past, he and his classmates were ready to shoot their short film at the train station. However, they immediately ran into an issue that could jeopardize their class project. Tsurayuki accidentally bought a standard camera instead of a video camera. As everyone can tell, an ordinary camera is suitable for taking pictures and not recording moving objects. Luckily, Kyoya has a plan to work through the situation before the deadline.
This leads us to this week’s chapter of the series, with Kyoya’s idea coming to fruition. The group uses a series of camera stills shot at the station and Kyoya’s expert editing skills to tell their desired narrative. Their plan resulted in their short being well-received by the other students. But, unfortunately, it’s not enough for Kitayama to take first place, with Eiko’s team taking the crown.
The episode represents that improvisation can work around specific obstacles threatening the entire project. Whether it’s the script or camera malfunctions, improvising can lead to something unique compared to the ordinary aspects of filmmaking. It may not always work, but when it does, it is unlike anything we’ve ever seen before. It’s a shame that Kano gave Eiko’s team a higher grade because they are sisters.
The rest of the episode focuses on Kyoya spending time with the housemates after the end of the semester. These moments appear to be nothing but filler at first, but they’re actually a good excuse to provide more character development. For Nanako, she’s inspired to sing by her grandmother, although she’s not a pro at it. Then, Aki has a knack for drawing due to her not being good at anything else, which is why she enrolled in college. Most of the episode’s second half is spent on Kyoya attempting to boost confidence in Nanako and Aki to keep their futures intact.
The common theme in “Just Who Am I?” is inspiration, mainly for Kyoya and his roommates. While their first project didn’t win, Nanako and the others are inspired by Kyoya’s talent to do their best to improve themselves for their next movie. The episode portrays this theme reasonably well, but it also has a few good humorous moments, including the Fine Arts Club meeting. It’s another enjoyable chapter that continues to represent the process of fine arts and the light-hearted yet charming drama between the characters.
