English Dub Review: My Isekai Life: I Gained a Second Character Class and Became the Strongest Sage in the World! “Trying Out a Party”
Overview (Spoilers Below):
Yuji’s party members don’t have a high opinion of Tamers, but his tracking skills are too valuable to pass up. Maybe Yuji can change their minds once they see him in action.
Our Take:
Everyone knows that every RPG game allows a player to form a party, and this episode shows that this scenario is no different. The first chapter of My Isekai Life offered what we expected from an isekai series: a flashy action-packed plot filled with RPG elements and lots of slimes. It’s nothing too special regarding its formula, but it’s watchable despite the annoying slimy minions. Thankfully, I wasn’t ready to quit this game yet, as our hero faces another challenge in a new village, which would hopefully gain more interest in the series.
“Trying Out a Party” sees Yuji joining a party in a new guild due to his tracking abilities. The team consists of knife wielder Rodis, archer Tina, and spear wielder Lisa. They are tasked to track down a rock dragon hidden in the world. Along the way, the party discovers a secret from one of their own and a future that spells doom to the world.
Throughout the episode, we see more of Yuji’s origin and how he wound up in another dimension, which is actually an RPG game. Yuji fell asleep as a salaryman and woke up in the game he was playing as a novice Tamer. He tamed the first several slimes and discovered an abandoned hut of a deceased sorcerer, where he immediately gained the title of Sage when the slimes read the sorcerer’s books. I guess books are good for people, even in a fictional game.
The show made a solid choice in providing a nonlinear narrative for the season. It keeps the pace consistently smooth without any unnecessary pitstops, but it also continues to give some character depth to Yuji. Through its flashbacks, we see Yuji unintentionally gaining substantial power through his tamed slimes and fear of always being depended on. Considering his maxed-out skills, Yuji would have to overcome that fear to prevent an enormous catastrophe: The Blue Moon of Salvation.
Aside from that, “Trying Out a Party” is surprisingly less action-packed than the previous episode, with Yuji using ice magic to freeze the bandits without any issues. Additionally, the plot was a tad predictable, especially regarding Rodis working with the bandits to sell adventurers into slavery. As for the slimes, they’re still a bit annoying, but not so much as they were in the first episode so that counts as a slight improvement. The episode still benefited from its enjoyability, but will it be enough to carry the series through the remaining season?
"There are also other characters that come and go (also owned by the Warner Bros. Discovery conglomerate media company)."
Huh. Is that just referring to other characters from the show itself, or is this implying that the new season is going to have cameos from other WBD IPs
