English Dub Review: Lycoris Recoil “The more the merrier”

Overview

The LycoReco café receives a request from the top hacker, Walnut. He wants help fleeing the country from other hackers in the same business who are all after his head. The members of LycoReco work together to help Walnut escape, but a violent group of armed assailants attacks Chisato and the others…!?

Our Take

The opening was pretty great, especially in the animation aspect of it with small movie references sprinkled in. I can definitely feel more love being put in this anime. Also, the fact that Chisato won’t kill suggests a dark backstory when she did kill, resulting in something horrible happening or a horrible realization and I’m quite excited to see what it will be.

At the very least, What I like about Chisato is that she can execute her ideals while still being proficient at her job and missions. Way too many times have we seen protagonists who want to be a pacifist or don’t want to kill, but they endanger everyone else and mess up their missions because they were too incompetent to do so.

Overall, a solid second episode after a decent first episode. The chemistry/interactions between the two female leads remain consistently good. With the Buddy Cop dynamic of Chisato being so happy is funny to watch. Then you have Takina who’s way too serious but that’s a common trope. Anyway, I don’t sell the “best hacker” reveal of who Walnut was. But then again, the reveal of L from Death Note being a teenager almost as old as the protagonist I’m sure threw lots of people off. I’m curious what will happen next at this point…
