Review: The Loud House “Hiccups and Downs”

Luna needs to get rid of a nasty case of the hiccups before a big rock competition.

Our Take: 

This week sees The Loud House reducing itself to one new episode instead of two like in the previous weeks. But that doesn’t mean the loud party gets reduced as well. This latest episode in the show’s sixth season has Luna confronting one of the biggest challenges during her rise to fame: the dreaded hiccups.

The episode’s plot sees Luna’s band making it to the finals of the Rock Rumble. Unfortunately, her excitement caused her to get a case of the hiccups. This led to the Loud siblings attempting to eliminate Luna’s hiccups before her important gig.

The humor in the first half consists of the siblings’ failed “cures” to remove Luna’s hiccups. This includes Lana’s garbage remedy, Lucy and Luan’s scare tactics, and Lincoln and Lynn’s “Hiccup Eradicator”. Thankfully, Lisa created an anti-hiccup throat spray to remove her hiccups temporarily.

This is where the second half comes in, with Luna accidentally leaving the spray in Chunk’s van. As a result, she and her siblings race against the clock to get the spray back. However, when they caught up to Chunk, Luna clumsily broke her only cure for the hiccups. Fortunately, she and her band later discover that her hiccups create a catchy rhythm needed to win the competition.

“Hiccups and Downs” is easily bogged down by the familiar elements we’ve seen in other cartoons, with Luna catching the hiccups before a huge event. But it offers enough moments in its humor to keep it from being as annoying as having the real hiccups. With the main highlights being the Hiccup Eradicator and Flip’s radioactive, it may not be the true cure for the hiccups, but it does provide a cure for Loud-less boredom.
