English Dub Season Review: Love After World Domination Season One

Overview (Spoilers Below):

An evil organization, known as Gekko, is on a quest to collect peoples’ negative energy and create monsters with it. A team of superheroes, known as the Gelato 5, fight against them and vow to stop their evil deeds. The leader of the Gelato 5 (Fudo) and Gekko’s Reaper Princess (Desumi) fall for each other in the midst of these constant battles and start dating. They do as many couples activities they can and grow closer to each other; all while trying to keep their relationship hidden from everyone else.

Our Take:

Stories of forbidden love are nothing new, but new ideas can be implemented in these stories. In Love After World Domination, the relationship happens to be between a teenage superhero and teenage supervillain.

Fudo Aikawa, A.K.A. Red Gelato, is the leader of Gelato 5. He’s fearless, strong, and confident much like any good leader. He’s also very kind-hearted and he always means well. Unfortunately, he’s also oblivious to just about anything involving relationships and sometimes other people’s feelings. That being said, he always tries to perfect whatever he’s doing. Desumi, A.K.A. Reaper Princess, is also strong and kind-hearted. She likes to please everyone around her, but she doesn’t focus on herself as much as she should. These two always bring out the best in each other and it’s satisfying watching their interactions.

This show is chock full of sweet and funny moments between Desumi and Fudo. Whether it be Fudo being completely clueless on their first date or Desumi feeding Fudo while he’s in the hospital, there’s a couples moment for everyone to enjoy. Fudo and Desumi have amazing chemistry and they keep growing closer as the show progresses.

While Desumi and Fudo are obviously the stars of the show, there’s a myriad of other characters that are also entertaining. Fudo and Desumi each have their own romantic rivals: Anna Hojo and Haru Arisugawa respectively. Both of them add intrigue to the main couple’s dynamic without really taking away from it. Fudo’s mom is a funny and supportive side character that I wish we saw a little more of. There are other members of Gekko and Gelato 5 I thoroughly enjoy that I also want to see more of, such as the loud and rambunctious Beast Princess or the vain and pompous Blue Gelato.

I think the show’s visuals are very well done. This is the first anime I’ve watched from project No. 9 and if they other shows that look like this one, then I would say it’s a solid introduction. The character designs are appealing and varied. Not to mention, the fight scenes are animated very well. Even the funny and romantic scenes are well-detailed.

The actual plot of the show is typical for this type of premise, but it’s executed well. Even if I can figure out how an episode is going to end, it’s impossible not to root for Fudo and Desumi all the way. There are some plot points in episodes I don’t like, such as the complex Desumi’s younger sister has or how Blood princess heals her patients. In the grand scheme of things though, these are fairly minor complaints. Besides, they mostly revolve around other characters. I can’t think of anything major that I dislike revolving around the main couple, if anything at all.

Overall, Love After World Domination is a sweet, charming, and hilarious romantic comedy. It features superheroes, supervillains, monsters, funny misunderstandings, and forbidden love. Fans of any or all of these things will surely be satisfied with this show. I know I am, but I also know that I want to see more. I want to see more of some supporting characters and I especially want to see Fudo’s and Desumi’s relationship continue to grow.
