English Dub Review: Chainsmoker Cat “We’re in Kyoto”
Overview:
Yani and her flatmates set off on a Kyoto and Nara getaway-but her antics lead to an encounter with the “King of Deer”, a creature of ancient wisdom.
Our Take(Spoilers):
For those of you who are interested in OP and ED changes, I wanted to comment on this. This episode had some guest appearances perform the OP and ED for some reason. I could tell it was a different singer, but I don’t know what prompted the change this week. The next episode is the last one, so you would think they’d do it then, but I’m not sure. As I mentioned, I just thought this was something to touch on for a second.
This episode made me feel really bad for the manga artist, Tatsuno. She took all of her beastfolk friends to Kyoto on a trip, insisting that her company would pay for it. I could tell that something was off based on how she was behaving, but what happened seemed to come as a surprise to her as well. On the way back, she finally answered a phone call from her company, and they informed her that her manga had been cancelled.
I know just enough about how manga works that I know Tatsuno would still have a job for a little while. Typically, they don’t just end a manga out of nowhere. They inform the artist that it’s being cancelled within the next few weeks, so they need to start wrapping it up. I’ve read enough Shonen Jump manga to see this happen time and time again. It might be a surprise for us in the West because we don’t get that sort of news unless we look for it, so seeing “The End” for a manga can catch you off guard.
While in Kyoto, Yani met with a deer that claimed he was the last one with intellect. She offered him a cigarette to help with his troubles. I thought it was funny that an on-screen message saying “Do Not Give Cigarettes To Deer” popped up. I think most of us knew that, but I can understand why they wanted to cover their bases.
Assuming we get the last episode next week, we’ll soon be done with Chainsmoker Cat. At this point, I don’t know how to feel about it as a show. It feels like nothing really happened, and while it got some chuckles out of me, I can’t help but feel a little let down.
