English Dub Review: Tsukimichi Moonlit Fantasy “Hidden Ogre Village”

Well, after “Hidden Ogre Village”, there’s two episodes left. I’m not very sure where to go after this.

One thing that Tsukimichi has gotten right after nine episodes, is that the worldbuilding and exposition is on point. There’s so much going on with the world around Makato. While there’s a lot going on, there’s still a “monster of the week” feeling to Tsukimichi. This week, it’s a lich.

And that’s where the pedal hits the floor. The entire episode deals with Makoto and his time in the hidden Ogre village, and we meet some new characters, like the head of the village, and the master of the two hunters protecting the Ambrosia field. There’s a lot going on, including the introduction of Leech, the lich. I’m all for Leech to awkwardly hit on Makoto and make things really uncomfortable for the group.

A lot of the allure of Tsukimichi is the unknown. I have literally zero clue what’s going to happen in the final two episodes. The only thing I know is that Makoto is going to fight the Goddess. Is it going to be at the end of the season? I couldn’t tell you. But it will happen. And that’s what makes Tsukimichi so much fun. Yes, I can do without the harem aspects of the early episodes. But so far, This is what I want. Makoto actually makes me want to watch more, and his openness to take in a lich to further his magical learning definitely opens some doors going forward.

But the question is, what else is going on? Honestly, there isn’t a lot to talk about. Makoto would have gotten “killed” if Leech didn’t show himself. Tomoe knew the chief of the village, and got Makoto more revered in the village. However, the final segment of “Hidden Ogre Village” was what set the table for the next episode, because Tomoe inexplicitly drops, and starts bleeding.

On the whole, “Hidden Ogre Village” did a lot without doing a whole lot. We got a new member of the main team, adventurers presumably causing a lot of issues in the Illusory City, and Tomoe dropping dead while feeling like it was a five minute episode. When a 23 minute episode feels like five, you know you’re doing something right.

I feel excited for the final two episodes. The unexpected is exactly what we need to make things more exciting for Tsukimichi. Makoto seems to be more powerful than anyone realizes, and given the grave injury that Tomoe has come down with, there’s definitely great avenues the plot can go down. I’m waiting with baited breath for what comes next.
