English Dub Review: The Executioner and Her Way of Life “Port City of Libelle”

Overview (Spoilers Below):

The dreaded Pandemonium provides the people of Libelle a stark reminder of the power of Pure Concept – and it reminds Menou of what’s at stake in her quest to kill Akari.

Our Take:

Well, Menou’s first execution attempt didn’t go exactly as planned. Because of Orwell’s selfish needs, the chamber that happened to be the solution to kill Akari was destroyed. So Menou will have to find a different method to get this seemingly impossible job done. Unfortunately, she’ll have to search for one fast before meeting her inevitable demise.

The first half of The Executioner and Her Way of Life was quite enjoyable for the most part. It was a bit rushed at times, and it didn’t do much else to stand apart from the other isekai shows. Still, it had enough moments in its action and characters to keep me invested in the concept. So now we see if the show’s second half can try to prevent it from being executed too early.

The episode sees Menou and Akari making their way to the Sanctuary, where the former will hopefully find a way to execute Akari. After walking for two weeks, they arrived at their first stop, the Port City of Libelle, where they encountered one of the Four Major Human Errors: the Pandemonium. The Pandemonium is a fog prison that houses multiple monsters to keep the city safe. Menou uses the fog prison to kill Akari, but to the surprise of no one, it doesn’t work.

“Port City of Libelle” has a similar structure to “Goodbye”, which saw Menou and Akari hanging out together in a city before Akari’s execution. The difference is that there are more dialogue-driven moments in this episode compared to the show’s fifth episode. In addition to the Pandemonium, the episode features a new adversary that would eventually pose a threat to Menou’s journey. That enemy is The Fourth, a mysterious group that seeks vengeance against Flare for capturing their leader, Count Libelle, the city’s ruler. Led by Libelle’s daughter, Manon, The Fourth plans to eliminate Menou before she interferes with their latest plot.

This episode may not be as action-packed as the previous two episodes, but it did provide a few cute and charming moments in the characters’ interactions. It’s more than enough for me to keep watching the show, especially since Menou is starting to develop feelings for Akari and Manon is harvesting a young girl’s blood for some strange reason.
