English Dub Review: Lupin III Part VI “The Truth and The Raven”

Overview

In the matter of the late Lord Faulkner’s connection to the Raven, Sherlock and Lupin have eliminated the impossible; now only the improbable truth remains…

Our Take

Some pretty interesting developments this week. We finally find out the mystery of the dark room. While this is concurrently going on, Lupin and his crew end up in the inevitable cross-hairs of greedy and violent gun-toting thugs, as they attempt to escape with the poster, Holmes collapses and is rushed to hospital. That is, until, he decides to make a quick pit-stop to psychologically mess with Lily some more since her repressed memories could be a potential key to the answers she seeks in finding out who killed her father and Holmes’s longtime sidekick Watson.

While I totally get what Holmes was going for, I can’t support Holmes in this scenario. Despite the severity of “The Raven syndicates” crimes, and the ongoing body count by their hand, putting a fourteen-year-old child through such mental strain seems like a dick-move. I’m pretty sure there were better options at uncovering the mystery of their identity than triggering Lily’s trauma all those years ago, but at least most of the English dub cast all brought their A-game with Emi Lo’s performance as Lily easily being one of the standouts as she sells the drama with her balancing act between vulnerability and determination with her performance as a young teen who’s facing her fears while trying not to lose her cool.

Overall, with the way this cliffhanger ended, I was extremely hooked. It was exciting to see both Lupin and Holmes working together to uncover the room’s secret, but the puzzle itself and how they solved it was both far-fetched and weirdly implausible. If the secret to unlocking the vault was hiding in plain sight, then how the room did not get blown to hell previously is beyond me. Hopefully, we’re now way past those self-contained storylines that kept abruptly stretching and cutting in the middle of this plot because next episode we’ll finally see what this all culminates towards.
