English Dub Review: Lupin III Part VI “An Invitation From the Past”

Overview

An auction of rare items draws Lupin’s notice, but he isn’t the only one with eyes on the prize; this newcomer may not be just a formidable stranger but could be connected to Lupin’s past…

Our Take

Long after the Holmes storyline concluded, we now have a new Lupin story that takes place in New York where Lupin and his gang try to steal a gem that was once taken from the vault of his famous Grandfather and French Thief, Arsène Lupin. To do this he went as far as to create these micro bug drones that were placed on the set of flowers that a flower store picked for him. Before he could make his move an all-female group of thieves that looked identical in both uniform and hair color, crashed the auction and they were well equipped.

But aside from the presence of those identical lady thieves, there are more than a handful of “random” women who pop up throughout the episode who may very well be part of this particular storyline. For instance, Mattea the flower shop owner is very sweet, though a little suspicious, but it remains to be seen what place or part she’ll play as the story continues to progress. To the mystery of the Identical-looking lady thieves, and the even more tantalizing mystery of how Lupin’s mother could play into the overall narrative.

Overall, while nearly every part of this episode was fantastic and was almost thrown off by the new end-credits music, it still excelled when it delved into the mechanics behind how Lupin would set up a heist in such a meticulous way. Despite being a bit slow-paced, at the very least, this new unraveling plot could also tell us what kind of person Lupin’s mother was like since past storylines have established that our titular anti-hero is half French/Japanese and the reveal of his mother’s name is a big deal to longtime fans while leaving new ones wanting more…
