English Dub Review: Don’t Hurt Me, My Healer! “Forced to travel with Carla, a healer…”
Overview:
Alvin and Carla begin their adventure together. They attempt to gather antidote herbs, but their quest gets disrupted by traps and monsters.
Our Take:
Since Alvin and Carla can’t be more than 300 meters apart, Alvin is forced to bring Carla along with him on his adventures. They go on a quest to gather antidote herbs, but there’s trouble at every turn. They’re bombarded by ghosts, Alvin falls into a goblin’s trap, and they get spotted by a cyclops.
Naturally, Carla isn’t very helpful throughout any of this. She helps the ghosts be at peace by saying their lives were better than Alvin’s, consoles the goblin while making Alvin seem like the bad guy, and fails at summoning a monster to fight the cyclops. Sure, the cyclops turns out to be friendly, but nobody knew that at first.
Carla’s not quite as as annoying as she was in the last episode. Plus, she has a couple of moments that made me chuckle. The interactions between Alvin and the monsters were also funny. I really enjoyed the scene with the cyclops. If this show put the monsters at the forefront instead of Alvin and Carla, I think it would be a lot more fun.
Carla also gets a small moment of humanity during the camping scene at the end of the episode, but she immediately goes back to being the annoying healer she is. Again, if Alvin was enough to offset her, this would be more tolerable. Unfortunately, he still doesn’t have much of a personality to speak of.
I’m also confused about the setting of the show. I don’t know if it takes place in a medieval setting or just a generic fantasy world, but there’s a lot of modern slang thrown in. I’m probably overthinking it, but if this show does take place in a medieval- themed world, those kinds of choices in the dub are rather questionable. Then again, this is a comedy and not meant to be taken that seriously, so I guess it’s not a huge deal.
Overall, this episode is a step up from the previous one. However, I’m still waiting for actual supporting characters to be introduced. If there are plenty of fun supporting characters, this show has the potential to be alright. It’s solidifying that with this second episode, but these two characters cannot carry the show alone.
"There are also other characters that come and go (also owned by the Warner Bros. Discovery conglomerate media company)."
Huh. Is that just referring to other characters from the show itself, or is this implying that the new season is going to have cameos from other WBD IPs
