English Dub Review: Ascendance of a Bookworm “The Black Protective Charm”

Overview

Because of the lack of caution exercised by one of the gate guards, the carriage with the noble from another domain has entered the city. Gunther finds out that Main is being targeted and gets worked up over protecting Main. But then, Main is attacked by some mysterious men. Main believes what Sylvester told her and presses her blood seal upon the black charm he gave her. But then, Main’s attackers become even more aggressive. Finally, the high priest’s true intentions and his plans with Dirk are revealed…


Our Take

The church conspiracy plotline finally rears its ugly head now, with all parties on the scene, and Main’s Devouring mana powers are now at their strongest and most dangerous it’s ever been. Dirk’s adoption by a noble, along with the High Priest’s involvement in Main and Tuuli’s double kidnapping in broad daylight with the failed blocking, it’s all culminated with a legit sense of danger.

Sylvester’s black protective charm certainly makes its use now, but for Head Priest Ferdinand to go missing, it starts to become a domino effect of trouble. Furthermore, with Dirk’s new adoption with the egregious Count Bindewald, Delia has no salvation being the High Priest’s tool, and her case use is almost done at this stage with the Devouring servitude contract…

Overall, this was quite a suspenseful episode. Somehow I had a feeling that the servant named Jenny was just as mentally messed up as the high priest. Delia is still clueless and helpless as ever, while Ferdinand just walks in the whole scene also not having a clue which at least gave me a small chuckle. The fight scenes were incredible though. Ferdinand saved the best for the last, faking his presence and taking action to serve justice. And unknowingly, Main might have made a bad decision without realizing it…
