English Dub Review: The Executioner and Her Way of Life “Goodbye”

Overview (Spoilers Below):
As Momo investigates a rash of disappearances, Menou and Akari spend a final day together. But sinister forces move in the shadows, and the upcoming ritual isn’t as it seems…

Our Take:
Menou’s mission to kill Akari has reached its end. However, since there are only a lot of episodes left in the season, there has to be something else that threatens to extend the executioner’s assignment. It’s evident that this journey isn’t all sunshine and roses based on this episode.
Last week’s episode concluded with Menou agreeing to go on a “date” with Akari while Momo heads off to solve the mysterious disappearances of young women. “Goodbye” continues this arc with the girls exploring Garm and Momo gaining an unexpected ally during her mission. Unfortunately, that ally is none other than Princess Ashuna, who gave her so much trouble in the third episode. They eventually discover that the Noblesse are involved in performing summoning spells with a high-ranking Faust. Momo and Ashuna then realize that Orwell is the only person capable of casting this spell, resulting in them and Menou discovering the true revelation behind Orwell and the ritual.
First off, I would like to point out that Menou and Akari’s time at Garm was a sweet moment that’s overshadowed by Akari’s impending fate. Then, there’s a moment between Momo and Ashuna in which they form an unlikely alliance to solve the women’s disappearance. While it did offer some humorous banter between the two, it also featured a brief flashback involving a young Menou fixing Momo’s hair. This signifies that we may get more information on how these two girls first met in one of the upcoming episodes. Hopefully, it will be sooner rather than later since I want to know why Momo is constantly affectionate over Menou.
But, of course, the episode isn’t without a massive plot twist that kept the show going for me. It’s revealed that Orwell isn’t so kind after all, as she’s the one responsible for capturing the women in Garm in an attempt to restore her youth. She plans to use the chamber to erase Akari’s personality to use her Pure Concept to become immortal. Meanwhile, Momo and Ashuna are trapped in the summoning chamber and will have to fight their way out together.
The compelling twist in the second half and its cute moments between the characters make “Goodbye” a surprisingly engaging episode rather than a rushed farewell party. The isekai formula still lingers during the whole scenario. However, I can admit that I’m still interested in where this show is going next, especially after what happened in this episode. Menou would definitely need some luck for next week’s episode since Orwell destroyed her scripture. I know I will give some luck to her.
