English Dub Review: The Dawn of the Witch: “I Can’t Save Anything”

Overview: Sayb (Travis Mullenix), Hort (Kimmie Britt) and Kudo (Joe Cucinotti) do their best to make amends for their previous shortcomings.

Our Take: Seeing how the gang is learning from their recent mistakes to not make them again is what gives gravitas to their trials, rather than simply being resolved within one episode and swept under the rug. As they plan a trip to a forbidden library, with banned texts and knowledge, Zero passes out due to her magic deficiency and explains a bit about Sayb’s father, Thirteen. How Zero tiptoes around who he is exactly while shedding a bit more light on him tees up for a momentous revelation for Sayb that will no doubt be interesting to see in how he perceives his father. Sayb is the only one who can understand his herb book and uncover its secrets further making their connection even more intriguing in how close their ties are.

Sayb and Laos go into the forest to get tea leaves and learn about herbs, plants, etc. They are attacked and Sayb struggles to save Laos with them both worse for wear. The pondering of his future in whether Sayb wants to be a magic supplier or mage for a strong moral plight, laying the groundwork for him choosing the latter and a compelling motivation to help Laos and his friends in the future.

A remnant of darkness attacked them with Zero deducing that someone let it in within the village to possibly break peace between the church and witches. Holdem finally makes his appearance, reporting similar occurrences across the kingdom and here to, supposedly, do an inspection, but his scheming with Tyrant definitely says otherwise. Holdem, Mercenary and Priest also get a nice little character moment in their dumb friendly bickering in trying to top one another’s grief and torment they have experienced. Zero comes, despite Mercenary’s reservations, with him, Priest, and Lily to inform neighboring villages and sniff out the rat laying the remnants in the village. It seems to predictably point to Holdem with his troubled history playing a big role. Also, with Tyrant lurking, and Holdem not alerting anyone of him seemingly breaking out of his custody, it strongly leads one to believe they are scheming, however, perhaps there is more to the story to come. Various intriguing cogs are moving in the hidden plot to destroy peace and Holdem’s own personal vengeance.
