English Dub Review: Skeleton Knight in Another World – “The Capital in Chaos and a Maiden’s Oath”

“The Capital in Chaos and a Maiden’s Oath” has it all.

After a lot of small fights and skirmishes, Skeleton Knight… has finally given us the insane battle I’ve been yearning for since picking this up. There are four attacks on four different slave markets, and everything seems to be coming to a head quickly. After nine weeks, all I can say is “finally!”

I really needed this. Watching both Ariane and Chiyome finally cut loose, and adding the aftermath of Goemon and Arc outside, we’re finally getting to see the true power of this still unnamed world. The added weight of seeing what happened to the sick and injured beast people just showed how cruel and inhumane the humans really were. Real life humans can be sick and deprived, but just killing the injured and sick because they “had no value” is a whole different level.

However, giving the dead a proper send off with a funeral pyre was rather cathartic after seeing what the dead had to go through. Showing the souls of these people ascending like they’re flames was a great touch. You can tell the bond is growing between the main four of this group.

To add to the catharsis of the episode, you see how Dakares handles karma, when he meets his end in a completely different encounter. From his first appearance, the slime just oozed off of this character. That makes seeing Dakares meet his end was great. However, there are a lot of other questions that popped up from this.

For instance, the death of Dakares shows how well the writers were able to just add blocks and during the course of the season. Showing that Sekt is playing chess while his brother, and presumably his sister, are barely playing checkers was something I was not expecting. All of these bits and pieces just weave together effortlessly, making the enjoyment go through the roof. The building that the story does to keep things moving is just fantastic. There has been something about Sekt from that first time I saw him. That self-righteous, almost timid demeanor he had in that first appearance was almost like he was hiding something.

And that’s because you never feel like Skeleton Knight… ever really slows down in its storytelling. Let’s just get this out of the way now: “The Capital in Chaos and a Maiden’s Oath” is almost the perfect episode title. Yuriana finally gets to her destination, and we’re getting the news as the rest of this world is getting it. Getting to the end of the episode, we’re finally getting into the end game of this arc, and we get the first look at emperor of Holy Revlon Empire, Emperor Domitianus. Finally, we get where the rings that controlled all of the various animals, and what will probably be the final big bad of the arc, Fumba.

I feel like we are getting into the end game for the (hopeful) season of Skeleton Knight in Another World. I have been so enthralled with what’s been going on, that I almost wish that we had gotten a long form series. However, these short, 13 episode seasons make shows so much more digestible. Doesn’t change the fact that I need more of it, and I need that now.

The first half of “The Capital in Chaos and a Maiden’s Oath” gave me the action I’ve needed for 9 weeks now. The second half positioned Skeleton Knight… to have an absolute banger of a final arc. There are a lot of puzzle pieces finally coming into place, and I am expecting a lot of action going forward, especially with Fumba on the board, and ready for a fight.
