English Dub Review: The Greatest Demon Lord Is Reborn as a Typical Nobody “The Demon Lord’s Play”

Overview (Spoilers Below):
The Headmaster begs Ard to participate in the upcoming battle event, and he struggles to decide since the risk is great whether he accepts or refuses. During that time, Ginny invites him out on a date. Ireena butts in, but Ginny quickly approves of her coming too. Ireena tries to be even more considerate, so Ginny speaks of her true ambition. Then, on the day of their date, the three run into a suspicious group of people.

Our Take:
It looks like Ard is facing another significant challenge of being an ordinary nobody in this episode. While it does involve not exposing himself in front of Lady Olivia, it’s not the main focus of the story. Instead, the plot has Ard facing another obstacle that dares to interfere with his quest to live an average life: going on a date. By that, I mean a “double date”.
For this episode, we see Ard being invited by Ginny to go out on a date after class, only for Ireena to tag along with them. Seeing that Ginny is a succubus, her only desire on this “date” is to create a harem for Ard, much to the disapproval of Ireena. However, they come across a mysterious cultist group planning to kidnap the Queen during their date night, forcing them to stop their ploy. What Ard and the girls didn’t realize is that this cult has a different target in mind.
This was another charming and humorous episode that features the main character struggling to be normal and kind instead of him as a powerful sorcerer. Additionally, it features another small piece of information from Ard’s previous life as Varvatos, mainly his lover Lydia, as Ard and the girls attend a play representing Varvatos’s life. While the performance portrays Lydia as sweet and romantic, Ard remembers her as a fierce warrior who fought by his side in a war. It was an interesting choice for the show to briefly reflect on Ard’s life as Varvatos amid its episodic plots. But it’s also a choice that effectively represents what Ard was vs. what he wants to be.
The plot offers some familiar elements in this episode, mainly regarding Ireena’s jealousy of Ginny’s affection for Ard. However, they were quickly overshadowed by its direction and humor, especially Ard’s attempts to avoid being succumbed by lust, mainly from the girls and Queen Rosie. With Ginny and Ireena going goo-goo over Ard, it would be interesting to see how long their traits would last until they become tiring.
