English Dub Review: The Dawn of the Witch “Don’t Call Me a Traitor”

Overview: Hort (Kimmie Britt) and Saybil (Travis Mullenix) are hot on Professor Loux (Monica Rial) and Kudo’s (Joe Cucinotti) trail as Tyrant (Josh Putnam) hunts down the beastman.

Our Take: Wasting no time whatsoever, Holt and Kudo get a slice of their own backstory served as the angry beastman finds himself under attack with a rescue underway from Saybil, Christasse and Holt. Each one, although short, is decently enough executed for the time that is allotted for each. Kudo’s harsh painful life is gripping in his abuse and racism for being of the beast race. It makes his rebelling against Tyrant relatively compelling for the few scenes shown at least. Holt’s friend dying at the hands of Tyrant connects it to the villain, but hopefully that plot point has relevancy and impact that have lasting effects that go beyond this episode, especially with him being taken down so quickly since introduced. Holt’s fear from the church since the killing of her childhood friend is a surprising twist. It is a compelling and empathizing catalyst for her betrayal and being a mole for them. Hopefully, we get more with each of them later on to better flesh them out in the future.

Saybil gets his own nice little moment as well with his reliability and dedication to Holt despite her previous allegiance to the church. With Tyrant, there is not much to say with him. He’s a simple mindless beast with cruel viciousness. Perhaps that is all he was intended to be, but with his significance in the lore of the church and Holt’s past, there can and should be more to him. Saybil’s battle and win against him is intriguing in how little is shown about it thus far, with the only known quantities being Christasse’s dark magic eating staff saving the day and being satiated with Saybil’s vast reservoirs of magic. This is an interesting tease for his seemingly limitless potential down the line as they all form their group. Hort, Saybil and Kudo bickering with the Louz finally starts to make them feel like a real ragtag group of friends that we are just getting to know as they begin their adventures.
