English Dub Review: Lupin III Part VI “Enter Sherlock Holmes”

Overview

Rumor has it that the Raven, a secret society with fingers in the British government, guards a treasure, and Lupin aims to collect it despite the interference of one Sherlock Holmes…

Our Take

Much in the same way the last episode delved into the themes of updating/modernizing fictional characters in modern contemporary settings, This show continues that trend with a modernized rendition of Sherlock Holmes who despite being a work of fiction himself, now exists in Lupin III’s universe with a slightly colorful yet unkempt look about him as reflected in his appearance and office. We also have the introduction of another seasonal character. A small English schoolgirl by the name of Lily, who I guess is the stand-in for this show’s version of “Watson”? It’s not properly specified at the moment…

Also judging from the cliffhanger, they both seem to have an established history with Lupin, so it should be interesting to see what happened ten years ago when Lupin was in London previously. I’m also guessing “Episode 0” was a self-contained story due to still seeing Jigen within the team. Either that or it happens at a very later point in time.

Overall, this episode played with my expectations in a good way, making the audience think that the thief was Lupin when it wasn’t. Upon research, it was a character from the previous season. However, some things remained predictable yet charming such as Fujiko’s disguise reveal. In combination with the new characters, the story remains extremely compelling and holds a lot of potential.
