English Dub Review: Heroines Run the Show: The Unpopular Girl and the Secret Task “I Don’t Understand Idols!”

Overview

Based on the song “Heroine Tarumono!”, which is part of the Kokuhaku Jikkō Iinkai: Ren’ai Series Vocaloid song project by HoneyWorks. The story follows Hiyori Suzumi, who after leaving her hometown to continue pursuing her passion for track and field, enrolls in Tokyo’s Sakuragaoka High School.

In search of a part-time job, and out of sheer dumb luck, Hiyori ends up becoming an apprentice manager for her classmates Yuujirou Someya and Aizou Shibasaki, who just so happen to be members of a 2-person male idol group known as “LIPxLIP”…

Our Take

In a nutshell, the story follows the struggles that Hiyori faces with school, extracurricular activities, and her managing job, as well as the idol group LIPxLIP as they perform on stage which in itself is hilariously weird for a student to be sort of a manager to a 2-person Idol band at such a young age.

I know teens are allowed to get jobs within Japan but to some, it’s considered looked down upon within their society since most students are encouraged to study more than work their asses off in a job that you’d think would help in their learning experience. But in America, this isn’t the case at all due to the many different laws we have that allow employment for teens without any sort of shame.

Overall, this was a delightful start for the first episode. It’s a bit heavy in terms of exposition due to how many characters had to be introduced but that was a minor gripe on my end. It remains to be seen what directions this will take but who knows what will happen next.
