Review: Dicktown “The Mystery of the Marauding Mascot” & “The Mystery of Meg’s Extremely Violent and Inappropriate Musical”

Overview

“The Mystery of the Marauding Mascot”

Richardsville High School cancels its mascot because there’s an evil doppleganger running around disparaging the school’s once proud name. David and John have to jump in to clear the name of the original cosplayer of Grubby aka Mitch. After a meeting with Mitch’s girlfriend we come to find out that the evil doppleganger was much closer to Mitch than first thought. We also get a new lead on the case of the crazy motorcycle lady.

“The Mystery of Meg’s Extremely Violent and Inappropriate Musical”

John and David join the cast of a musical and must sing their way to a solution as to why real weapons are being used in a production. After cracking the case, John and David come back to John’s houseboat which is now on fire thanks to Katie the stalker.

Our Take

Shit with Katie the stalker is starting to heat up and Dicktown is really starting to grow on me. I personally think the humor of this show comes in the big surprises and David’s one-liners leading up to them. Yea, and then let’s talk about the very Alec Baldwin/Rust-like premise of the show’s second episode which seemed to hit on the nose a bit too hard. In fact, with both episodes having a bit more of a “cancel culture” premise, we’re starting to see Hodgeman’s Daily Show acumen shine through on the writing.

The serial nature of Dicktown makes me wonder if this series would’ve been better served a streaming-first series. With FXX pushing back the start time to Dicktown back an hour, it makes me wonder if the network sees a future with this show on the network. While other networks like Comedy Central and TBS are experimenting with moving up the premiere times of their animated franchises, FX is the only one seeing what it can do when premiering later.
