English Dub Review: Platinum End: “World’s Greatest Assassin”

Overview: Mirai (Alejandro Saab) and Saki (Laura Post) think they’ve hidden themselves under the radar well until they get a surprise visit from Metropolitan detectives.

Our Take: With Yuito revealing the details of angels and their chosen god candidates while also championing Mirai to be the next God, the world begins to spiral out of control even more so than it already was. Seeing Mirai use his head and think rationally has been a breath of fresh air for him as a character. Mirai deducing that Yuito is keeping the details of some of his specific angel abilities, showing he is not as upfront, and perhaps trustworthy, as he makes himself out to be.

While logical thinking has become a key aspect of Mirai, it is not sweeping his previous personality traits under the rug either. It is smartly being melded with his honorable nature in how he takes into consideration Saki being under the influence of his red arrow when she wants to run away with him and him choosing not to do so in order to see the conflict through, honor that of Nanato and not be afraid to live his life freely. With that being said, he still has about as much personality as Bran Flakes and his melodramatic/on the nose backstory does not help anything. However, at least now he is starting to become more palatable in being someone to root for as opposed to him earlier in the season.

However, just when Mirai and Saki believe themselves to be safe at school, a new development in Metropolitan detectives and a couple, Hoshi and Yumiki, track them down. With their presence they expand the threat level of the world around them while also offering much needed reinforcements on account of Nanato passing. Saki accidentally shooting Yumiki with a red arrow gets the plot moving in the agents explaining how they are tasked with hunting down and imprisoning God candidates, and that other agencies from different countries are hunting down God candidates to use their power for their own personal gains.

Mirai and Saki’s decision to trust Hoshi and Yumiki is well-executed for how quickly they come to the decision. with being compelling in their. That’s reflected in Hoshi and Yumiki’s honesty and good moral compass as well as Hoshi’s internal thoughts about saving Mirai due to his humanity and good storytelling through the use of their private apartment to portray Hoshi and Yumiki’s relationship. After helping the detectives fill in some blanks, Mirai and Saki run down a list of suspects who could be God candidates. Their investigation eventually leads to Kanade’s best friend, who becomes suspicious after he suddenly gets a cute girlfriend funny enough. It seems unlikely that he’ll be connected in that way, but it does seem like a smart way of transitioning Mirai and the gang into finding out about Yuito and his manipulation of Metropoliman aka Kanade, pushing the plot and mystery of the young boy forward.
