English Dub Review: Love of Kill “Real Face”

Overview

Chateau goes to church on the anniversary of her father’s death. She runs into Ryang-ha, who is his usual self before they are met by an attacker. Meanwhile, Chateau’s boss is meeting with her mother in an effort to understand her past…

Our Take

Primarily, this episode serves an an info-dump of sorts for Chateau’s boss (And by-extension the audience) in regards to Chateau’s backstory. And given how she was found, her past is possibly connected to Ryang-ha’s apparently. I’m really curious about their connection which could explain why the dude wants to be involved with her so badly. At the same time, we also learn that “Dankworth” wasn’t originally her last name, and find out who actually raised her through a good portion of her life which is the closest thing to anything wholesome on Chateau’s end.

Also the church gunfight scene gave me a chuckle on how hilariously underestimating that it was for the thugs going after Chateau only to encounter Ryang-Ha, I’m surprised with the fact how contrived it felt with Hou being Taser-proof due to “damaged nerves” from being an ex-addict (Is that shit even possible?). With the way the cliffhanger played out, it felt a bit disappointing that we don’t exactly see a fight but sound effects of Gunfire here and there which feels like a bit of a tease, especially the cliffhanger ending.

Overall, the insight into Chateau’s past was really interesting and paints a somewhat bittersweet picture of who she is as a person even if it doesn’t feel like the complete picture. The show so far is also giving off some really weird vibes. You’ll have a chill soundtrack playing in the background while gunfights and carnage unfolds left and right which sometimes doesn’t give off the right tone. Yet I it really helps in developing this off-center vibe that the show seems to be going for. And after seeing that flashback, it looks like we’re starting to get somewhere with the plot…
