English Dub Season Review: The Faraway Paladin Season One

Overview:

Born into a new world after a life of stagnancy, Will awakens to the faces of a skeleton, a ghost, and a mummy. Living in the ruins of a city long fallen, the three raise Will as their own. The skeleton— Blood—teaches him to fight; the ghost—Gus—teaches him magic; and the mummy—Mary—teaches him religion and responsibility. Most importantly, they all teach him love.

Our Take:

There are two issues I have with The Faraway Paladin. One, it starts really, really slow but to be fair it is also pretty interesting. Two, if I hear Will shout “Acceleratio!” one more time I am going to lose my mind. It’s a super useful spell I get it but good lord my dude do you HAVE to shout it every time? I know it’s an anime trope but it reaches new levels in this one.

As far as negatives go though those are the biggest ones I ran into. There is the occasional poor animation when it comes to the CGI monsters but I have seen way worse so I wasn’t too bothered.

You wouldn’t know till near the end of the first episode I believe but this is an isekai but it doesn’t feel like it. So if you’re tired of that and just want straight fantasy this gets pretty close to scratching that itch. I really like the characters in this, especially Will’s “parents”. What they sacrificed to help the world was a pretty cool story to hear and I really hope we get to see more of them in the future.

The Faraway Paladin is a good but somewhat forgettable show. It takes a long time to get going and by the time it gets really interesting it ends and don’t get me started on the “recap” episode. Luckily for those of us that liked it, there will be a second season and since dubs aren’t taking as long as they were we might not be waiting all that long. Just please no more acceleratio…
