English Dub Review: Deep Insanity THE LOST CHILD “take 03”

Overview (Spoilers Below):

Larry goes on a dangerous and illegal mission deep into the Asylum and forces Shigure to come with him.

Our Take:

Deep Insanity is back from its hiatus to bring us another mission for Sleeper Platoon 11. Although, this one, in particular, is more of an AWOL mission than an assigned one. The episode sees the platoon members taking a day off from their assignments to do some shopping. However, their small break quickly ends when a dealer tasks Shigure and Larry to retrieve the seeds from the Vista Pazza tree.

The episode continues the show’s character development by pairing the main character, Shigure, with one of the Sleeper agents. Its previous episode, “take 02”, showcases Shigure’s discovery of Sumire’s tragic past. Here, we see more of the friendship between Shigure and Larry, who, as we all know at this point, isn’t afraid of everything. This formula worked well in “take 02” because it gave viewers some breathing room to explore one of the supporting characters amid the Sleeper missions. The same can also be said in “take 03”, as it further examines Larry as a character and the Asylum’s history.

The episode properly introduces the viewers to the exiles, humans who live in the Asylum, and the organizations that explored the realm. One of the exiles that Shigure and Larry encountered was EL-Cee, a young girl who helps them find the tree and saves them from a flying Scarred. While EL-Cee played a role as a damsel in distress at first, she later became an interesting addition to the cast as she’s revealed to be the primary target in Shigure’s assassination mission.

I also enjoyed this episode because it represented fear. Due to Larry’s lack of fear, he’s usually assigned as bait for the Scarred. However, this episode has Shigure volunteering to lure the Scarred away as a decoy instead of Larry. I thought it was a thoughtful moment that shows fear as a way to survive. Sometimes, we see fear as an obstacle that prevents us from doing something. However, in situations like this, fear also protects us during specific tasks. This episode did a pretty suitable job representing this theme, in my eyes.

Overall, “take 03” is another respectable chapter in the LOST CHILD story arc. It provides more development for Larry and further expands on the Asylum through the introductions of human exiles. Unfortunately, the CGI effects for the Scarred creature still looked a bit rough regarding the textures. Despite that, it’s a welcoming return for the series that leaves more questions than answers.
