English Dub Review: Sonny Boy “Summer and the Demon”

Overview:

Kossetsu reads the minds of others passing by in a train station world using her true power. She pines for Asakaze, knowing that he is interested in Nozomi and that Nozomi is the only one who can change him…

Our Take:

I thought Emily Nieves was too big a voice actor to waste on a one-off character so I wasn’t surprised when her character, Kossetsu, got a whole episode. She has quite the useful power as well, she is able to read minds. There were a couple of flashbacks to earlier scenes so we could see what certain characters were thinking at those moments.

We got a little bit of romance in this episode because Kossetsu is in love with Asakaze but as we’ve all noticed he’s in love with Nozomi. I was hoping we would get a little light shed on the whole Nozomi/Nagara dynamic but not this episode at least. After hearing his thoughts Asakaze is a bigger dick than I thought. I was under the impression he was just being manipulated but was still a good person. While he is being manipulated he is also just kind of a douche so I don’t feel as bad. I do want to learn more about Ms. Aki though so I was hoping Kossetsu would hear some of her thoughts but we only got like one.

Sonny Boy is still confusing in a lot of ways. I don’t know how Asakaze’s power works he “killed” someone by turning them into an object? While saving Nozomi he somehow turned her into a compass? While trying to figure out something about Mizuho’s power there were two chickens ordered and Nagara killed one which seemed like it meant something but what? What I’m getting at is I am back to being way confused by this show. But I am still excited to see where it goes and how it all comes together in the end.
