English Dub Review: Platinum End: “Time to Assemble”

Overview: Mirai (Alejandro Saab) and Saki (Laura Post) watch in suspense as Metropoliman lures out Metro Blue and Metro Yellow, attempting to strike and ending their candidacy as God.

Our Take: In what can only be called an exciting turn of events for a series that has struggled with clearly defining its’ characters, the focus shifts to where it’s true strength lies. In this case, that happens to be the scheming plot in which Metropoliman lures out other God candidates in that of Metro Blue and Metro Yellow. On a side note, a fanboy giving them their names is a smart way to simplify things and, funnily enough, makes sense for the Ultraman vibes their costumes evoke. It is quite the nail-biting episode that defies expectations quite a bit throughout. As the plot thickens and develops around Metropoliman’s trap, it has you second guessing every decision Blue and Yellow make, what is random chance  and what is a clearly orchestrated act on his part.

There is an attempt to make Metro Blue and Metro yellow compelling but overall fails in that regard, due to how half-baked their motivations of giving up on life are due to not getting into a college. This also extends to their characters as well as neither of them lack any discernible personality. The one silver lining to be found is their dedication to each other is at least sweet. Overall, it’s a well planned and clever scheming Metropoliman, even if some of it relies on blind luck in a random girl showing up and creating an opportunity for him to strike. Speaking of which, as that little girl’s life hangs in the balance, it sets up an exhilarating end as Mirai steps in, or is forced to by the looks of it from Saki.
